The role owns the backend for mobile apps and IoT devices, working end-to-end on Java/Spring Boot and Python REST APIs, AWS IoT/Lambda, MySQL, and monitoring/automation that keep millions of devices running.
What you’ll do
- Own the backend behind mobile apps and IoT devices
- Build and maintain Java/Spring Boot and Python REST APIs
- Operate AWS IoT and Lambda integrations
- Manage monitoring and automation (Ansible, Jenkins, ELK, Graphite, Docker)
- Work directly with Mobile, Embedded, and Product teams
- End-to-end role spanning cloud APIs and physical devices
What they’re looking for
- 8+ years of backend experience
- Deep Java 11+ / Spring Boot expertise
- Some Python and Groovy
- Track record building scalable REST APIs
- Bias toward the simplest thing that works
- Bonus: experience with MQTT, connected hardware, or Ansible automation

Our lineup includes the Hatch Sleep Clock, a contactless sleep tracker with no wearable, Restore 3, a smart sleep clock for adults, and Hatch Baby, plus a library of original sleep audio. Our products are in 1 in 3 US nurseries and we have over 5 million sleepers. We're fully remote with a small engineering team.
We're hiring a Staff Backend Engineer to own the backend behind our mobile apps and IoT devices: Java/Spring Boot and Python REST APIs, AWS IoT and Lambda, MySQL, plus the monitoring and automation (Ansible, Jenkins, ELK, Graphite, Docker) that keep millions of devices running in real homes. It's an end-to-end role, with cloud APIs on one side and physical devices on the other, and you'll work directly with the Mobile, Embedded, and Product teams.
We're looking for 8+ years of backend experience, deep Java 11+/Spring Boot, some Python and Groovy, a track record building scalable REST APIs, and a bias toward the simplest thing that works. Bonus points for MQTT, connected hardware, or Ansible automation.
