How to write the education section

What to include for each qualification, where the section goes, and when to leave dates, grades or high school out.

Education is usually short: what you studied, where, and when. Its place on the page depends on how recent and relevant it is.

For each qualification

  • Qualification and subject: "BSc, Computer Science" (in JSON Resume, studyType and area).
  • Institution: "University of Melbourne".
  • Dates: the year you finished is enough.
  • Optional: a strong grade, honours, a thesis or award that matters for the job.

Where it goes

  • Students and recent graduates: near the top, before experience.
  • Everyone else: after experience.

What to leave out

  • High school, once you have a degree or a few years of work.
  • Grades that don't help you.
  • Unfinished study: list it if it's relevant, with "coursework completed" or the years you studied, never as finished.

Courses and certificates

Short courses and certifications go under Certificates (certificates in JSON Resume), with who issued them and when.
