About

As a Front End Engineer with over eight years of experience in software development, I combine software development and a focus on user experience to create the most intuitive and accessible software for the users of the software I create. I have a degree in Computer Engineering and have studied Human Computer Interaction, which has equipped me with a more comprehensive understanding of user experience design. This has enabled me to create applications that are not only technically proficient but also genuinely enhance the lives of users. I pride myself on my ability to empathize with end-users, translating their needs and behaviors into meaningful digital experiences.

Work Experience

Work Experience

  • Front End Engineer, Amazon Web Services (AWS)

    Aug, 2021 - Present

Front End design and development on mostly internal products used by IT Support Engineers (ITSEs) that support all Amazon employees, with about 5,000 weekly users. Developing web applications with React, Redux, CSS / Sass, HTML and appropriate backends using Typescript and Node.js.

Lead the front end design and development on products used by ITSEs that support all Amazon employees. The main product is a web application that incorporates many tools together for the sake of enabling ITSEs to have an efficient and centralized workflow.

Spearheaded the development of re-usable micro-frontends, created and connected through Webpack's Federated Modules. These are used in multiple Amazon software packages by multiple development teams. Each implementation uses React lazy-loading, and the latest versions use custom web components and custom events to communicate with the host application.

  • Front End Software Development Engineer, Amazon Web Services (AWS)

    Jan, 2019 - Aug, 20212 years 7 months

UI development on the integration of AWS Support services with chat platforms such as Slack.

Started a new team and created a new AWS product that enables AWS customers to receive customer support in chat applications, the first instance being "AWS Support App in Slack." Lead the creation of the AWS console application used to set up and configure this new product, using React, Javascript and Node.js. Was responsible for initial UX designs and UI mockups for the console application and the user experience in Slack.

Prior to AWS chat integration, worked for the Trusted Advisor team on AWS, which automatically helps customers understand and follow best practices when using AWS services.

  • Software Development Engineer (Contract), Microsoft

    Apr, 2018 - Oct, 20186 months

Development on the Azure Internal Registration System (AIRS). This included work on the internal API used to create and modify Azure Subscriptions / Registrations. Also did substantial work in onboarding the new Azure Email templating system for AIRS. Full stack development including database work with SQL; API development in C# and ASP.net; and Javascript, HTML, CSS, Razor, and Kendo UI for the front end.

  • Software Developer, ReedHein & Associates

    Sep, 2017 - Mar, 20186 months

Lead the technical development of an internal Salesforce org, including creating an entire new org from scratch. Technologies used included Apex, VisualForce, SOQL (Salesforce Object Query Language), process automation, metadata configuration and in-depth Salesforce administration.

Orchestrated transitioning the company's development model to Salesforce DX, making development easier and more consistent. As part of this effort, created several open-source projects, including a publicly published Node module "sfdx" with over 100,000 downloads. More info at at npmjs.com/package/sfdx .

  • Software Engineer, The Advisory Board Company

    Jun, 2015 - Jan, 20171 year 7 months

Created a web app used by healthcare systems to show physician referral trends based on location. Frontend work in Javascript, Node.js, CSS and HTML, with backend work in SQL for data storage and APIs written in C# and the ASP.Net framework.

Developed Physician Relationship Management software for healthcare providers on the Salesforce platform. Front-end design and development using Salesforce technologies supplemented with Javascript, CSS, and HTML for UI and UX customization.

Volunteer collaboration and coding of an internal web app used to track employees' community service and volunteering efforts, built using Javascript and Node.js.

  • Computer Science Research Assistant, Iowa State University - College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

    Feb, 2013 - Jun, 20152 years 4 months

Collaborative development with physicians at Mayo Clinic (and beta programs at University of Texas and other institutions) to create, maintain and improve systems that provide real-time feedback during endoscopic examinations using OpenCV and C. Assisted professors and graduate students with engineering image analysis procedures to relate the analyzed movement of inspection cameras with measures of performance. Effectively created an enhanced version of the colonoscopy that resulted in an increased likelihood of physicians to detect abnormalities in patients, as shown through quantitative research.

Co-developed and administered web servers used to monitor remote systems, with development in Apache Tomcat and Java, and remote systems configuration via Windows Services and Batch Shell Scripting. Supplemented recorded examination videos with data visualization to demonstrate and verify the effectiveness of the real-time analysis using ffmpeg and R.

Projects Experience

Projects Experience

  • sfdx npm Node module

    Dec, 2017 - Present

Created and published a node module published on the npm public registry that allows Node projects to use Salesforce DX features. Public repository with full documentation available on GitHub. Currently, this module has been used over 100,000 times in Node projects.

  • Community Service Event tracking platform

    Jul, 2016 - Jan, 20176 months

Development on a new webapp for The Advisory Board to track community service projects and events that employees participated in and hosted. Technologies used were Javascript, Node.js, HTML and CSS.

  • Mars Analog Vehicle for Robotic Inspection and Construction [MAVRIC]

    Aug, 2012 - May, 20152 years 8 months

Designed and built a remotely-controlled robot to compete in the Mars Society’s University Rover Challenge. The robot was designed to complete a specific set of tasks in the least possible time. To control the robot, multiple microcontrollers were used (Microchip PIC18F series) for motor control. Wireless communications were sent over a serial connection.

    Tasks performed:
    • Site Survey – requiring visual feedback from the mounted video camera
    • Astronaut Assistance – delivering of specific payloads to specified locations
    • Sample Return and Analysis – extraction of material to return to base station and analyze
    • Construction and Repair – using the robotic arm to perform tasks remotely

  • NFC Geocaching

    Sep, 2012 - Dec, 20123 months

Developed an Android application that uses near-field communication technology to find user-placed tags. Tag locations are shown as points on a map, based on the user’s location. Each user has a profile that stores the tags found and placed.

  • MIPS Processor

    Jan, 2012 - May, 20124 months

Designed a 5-stage multi-cycle piplined processor using the VDHL structural description language. The processor supported 45 MIPS instructions and used hazard-detection and data forwarding to maintain execution efficiency. To test the operation of the processor, test programs written in MIPS assembly language were executed. The tests performed by these programs included hazard-causing logic and sorting integers using a merge-sort algorithm.

  • Mars Rover

    Oct, 2011 - Dec, 20112 months

As part of coursework for Embedded Systems I (CPR E 288) at Iowa State University, the final project involved programming a robot to safely navigate a course of obstacles without direct observation, using on-board signals as feedback. The programming platform was an Atmel ATmega 128 AVR micro-controller, integrated with an iRobot Create programmable robot. Interfacing with the ATmega 128 was a Hitachi HD44780U LCD display for readable output, along with a Sharp GP2D12J0000F distance-measuring infrared sensor, and a PING))) Ultrasonic Distance Sensor (#28015), both mounted on a Parallax Standard Servo (#900-00005).

To instruct the hardware, programming was done via AVR Studio using the C programming language, and critical code paths linked to hardware interrupts handled in AVR assembly code. Created a GUI using C# to send commands and observe the status of the on-board sensors to interact with the robot over a Bluetooth serial connection.
