Jose Daniel Ríos López
Software engineer with more than ten years on the platform that delivers Bitnami's open-source applications (container images, Helm charts and VM images), verified and ready to run, to enterprise customers' registries. I design and maintain the backend services behind it and the Kubernetes tooling around it, with a focus on scalability and on keeping delivery reliable through the changes of owner (Bitnami, VMware, Broadcom). I work closely with the teams around me, take the initiative to improve things before anyone asks, and lead projects along those lines. Based in Seville, working remotely.
Experience
Software Engineer
Tanzu Application Catalog and Bitnami: keep the content supply chain for the Bitnami and VMware catalog running, make the services behind it scale, and connect the catalog to Tanzu Platform.
- Maintain the end-to-end platform that takes customers' requests for applications and delivers verified container images, Helm charts and VM images to their registries, including the shift from public publication to delivery for paying customers only.
- Integrated the Bitnami and VMware catalog into Tanzu Platform, so customers can browse it, install and update applications from the platform, and see what is running in their clusters.
- Led the investigation into instability under load (memory growth, restarts, lost deliveries) and redesigned the platform's core services to scale with customers and applications and to recover cleanly from failures.
- Led the refactoring of the internal services onto a common architecture, and supported the team's technical direction through design documents and code review.
- Helped integrate the delivery pipeline with its surrounding systems: CI/CD automation, managed secrets and automatic dependency updates.
- Coordinated incident response, internal and customer-facing: worked live with the teams involved, fixed problems under pressure, and prevented repeats through monitoring, alerting and post-mortems.
Senior Member of Technical Staff
VMware Application Catalog (later Tanzu Application Catalog): the platform that builds, verifies and publishes the Bitnami catalog for enterprise customers.
- Designed and built the services that run the platform end to end, from receiving customers' requests for applications to delivering the packages to their registries, together with a shared catalog that supports the full compatibility matrix of applications, versions and distributions.
- Designed and led the system that generates, from declarative definitions, the source files for hundreds of packages across every supported application, version and distribution.
- Designed and developed the machinery (in Go) behind the build workflows that wire the whole path from discovering a new upstream version to having every supported application package built, verified and published to staging registries, ready to be distributed to customers.
- Led the investigation into bottlenecks and failures in the delivery pipelines and redesigned them to scale with the growing number of applications and customers and to run more reliably.
- Handled production incidents and customer support requests end to end, from diagnosis to the fix, and ran post-mortems that led to new alerting.
Member of Technical Staff
Bitnami joined VMware in 2019. Continued building and operating the platform that produced the Bitnami catalog.
- Evolved the service that tracks the catalog into the core of the platform: it knows every application in the catalog, what it depends on and which versions have been released, and is faster and observable.
- Built the tools used to define and manage each customer's catalog and to publish its packages to multiple registries.
- Extended the build pipelines to VM images and to catalogs beyond Bitnami's own.
- Gave the build platform visibility into why each application is rebuilt, and the metrics and automation to operate it.
- Contributed to the backend of the SaaS product and its supporting services.
Developer
Bitnami Cloud Hosting and the build infrastructure for the Bitnami application catalog: native installers, virtual machines and cloud images.
- Packaged open-source applications and software from independent software vendors (ISVs), and built the tooling that turned templated component definitions into installers, VMs and container images.
- Built the first version of the service that tracks the catalog's applications and releases, and the pipelines that build them.
- Maintained the tooling that promoted Bitnami images to cloud marketplaces (Azure and Google Cloud).
