Work Experience

Work Experience

  • Principal (Transportation) Data Engineer/Analyst, Energetics (Columbia, MD)

    Sep, 2023 - Present

Supported transportation data team with architectural, structural, procedural, and organizational needs.

    • Led a data group of 4-6 junior analysts in transportation electrification data projects to standardize electric vehicle charging station & session data from ~40 network service providers and utilities.

    • Wrote, deployed, and maintained code to transport, to transform, and to visualize data on cloud resources.

    • Translated operational business logic into conceptual, logical, and physical data models.

    • Designed & implemented a data lake architecture to integrate distrusted external semi-structured data sources: ingested external sources through python (dlt library) into Azure storage accounts; transformed through dbt with duckdb adapter; loaded back into MSSQL structured warehouse for report generation and dashboard inspection through PowerBI.

    • Developed MS Graph API code to programmatically ingest SharePoint lists and files as first-class data sources.

    • Refactored duplicated ingestion & transformation code across multiple projects into a single codebase with multiple parameterized deployments into their destination projects (adopting the 12 Factor App methodology).

    • Rewrote a ChargePoint NSP ingestion python routine to incrementally extract project data from the provider's remote HTTP SOAP API platform.

    • Led the migration of project management task digitization from OneNote through Azure Boards to Asana standardization across the organization.

    • Introduced and facilitated: a daily standup meeting to highlight obstacles within the immediate data team; a weekly project standup meeting with each project lead; a weekly brown bag learning or discussion topic.

    • Communicated project deliverable status and concerns to managers, customers, and collaborators.

    • Served as Energetics organizational liaison through technology migration from VSE Corporation to CLEAResult during division divestiture.

    • Interfaced with IT for edge case customer configurations & custom environments.

    • Improved organizational Claude Code techniques to optimize context & token management by favoring spec-driven and test-driven development.

  • Business Analyst (Quality Assurance), L3Harris (Waco, TX)

    May, 2021 - Sep, 20232 years 3 months

Developed and reported corporate operational performance metrics. Increased site data literacy through process automation.

    • Designed an analytics data warehouse to automate reporting from multiple ERP platforms (database, file, and REST API). Implemented modern data stack with Trino query engine, dbt transformation layer, and Apache Superset BI application. Deployed infrastructure components through containerized docker compose configurations. Scheduled automated transport from source to staging environment. Created feedback loop for rapid customer input turnaround. Hosted architecture & training discussions to introduce data stack to team peers.

    • Launched a site wide investigation into data source locations, ownership, custody chain, documentation, and splintered versioning practices. Drove progression and completion of existing data sources.

    • Provisioned analytic dataset to assess aircraft damage risk rating by shifting supervisor focus to high likelihood events.

    • Implemented automatic labor accounting proration report to avoid $10K+ annual spreadsheet curation manual labor cost (plus numerous data quality issues).

    • Created PowerBI reporting interface for engineers & supervisors to assess production data in bulk rather than using the existing Manufacturing Execution System to inspect case by case (adopted as authoritative for site).

    • Built ad-hoc analyses, dashboards, proof-of-concept demos, and presentations to a range of audience from product line managers through VP-level.

    • Acceptance tested vendor enterprise software, fostered discussion within internal Business Intelligence community, participated in regional data conferences, raised local community interest as an organization Brand Ambassador, mentored interns & new hires.

  • Operations Research, Waco Bottling (Woodway, TX)

    Jul, 2020 - May, 202110 months

Developed plant processes, policies, and training curriculum. Implemented technology solutions to drive operations adoption.

    • Administered MS O365. Designed on-prem equipment deployment and network infrastructure.

    • Sourced, negotiated, implemented and maintained an inventory Enterprise Resource Planning system to reduce spreadsheet dependency and introduce traceability of finished goods.

    • Optimized product line options using empirical sales analytics to increase e-commerce growth.

  • Project Associate (Data Analyst), Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (Blacksburg, VA)

    Jun, 2012 - Jul, 20208 years

Extracted insights from IT systems performance and researcher-led analyses by utilizing petabyte-scale time series, vehicle sensors, and unstructured data/media. Reported directly to the CIO of the IT group in the research institute.

    • Performed ad-hoc analyses, translated software requirements, and drafted technical and policy documentation.

    • Segmented vehicle trips through an iterative mixture model algorithm, identifying the full scope of hardware power cycling errors.

    • Transferred a government sponsored public access website from on-prem to AWS through CloudFormation. Maintained operation through infrastructure configuration changes and outages.

    • Supervised development of federally sponsored REST API to securely deliver research study data to 50 on-site and remote service customers. Developed R and Python package functionality to simplify researcher consumption of the API.

    • Operationalized research Python code & optimized SQL DB2 query efficiency in an HPC environment of 500 employees. Reduced one 48-hour MATLAB script runtime to a 48-second SQL query.

    • Characterized geriatric driving awareness study behavior by selecting ordinal regression models, documenting follow-up analyses, and presenting future recommendations.

    • Created a derivative weather data product. Designed, coded, and deployed a parallel Python algorithm on Slurm compute cluster to process GPS vehicle sensor data cross-referenced against public, historical NOAA weather station data.

    • Supported design of a secure data enclave. Exposed exclusive data access of PII in a policy & network-restricted setting, translated customer requirements and pre-configured software environments prior to on-site visits.

    • Provided feedback on statistical methodology for research proposals.

    • Supervised IT group student internships.

  • Statistical Engineering Intern, NASA Langley Research Center (Hampton, VA)

    Jun, 2011 - Aug, 20112 months

Designed central composite second-order response surface split-plot experiments for acceptance testing of pressure transducers in prototype spacecraft.

    • Compared mathematical and computational performance of a proposed method-of-moments pure error estimation technique to traditional REML through R data simulation.

  • Collaborator, Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis @ Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, VA)

    Jan, 2011 - Dec, 201110 months

    Teaching Assistant for Statistics Department

    • Provided feedback to university graduate researchers on numeric analysis projects. Applied practical quantitative analysis in target subject domains. Held consulting office hours for walk in clients.
