Staff Software Engineer · Tech Lead, Nortal (formerly Nearsure)
Jan, 2024 - Present
Joined Nearsure as a Software Engineer in January 2024, was promoted to Staff Software Engineer in September 2024, and have led the squad as tech lead since September 2025. Nortal acquired Nearsure in January 2026 and I continued in the same role. We build NetDocuments' document management and AI document generation platform, used by legal firms in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, and Australia.
Tech lead for a 10-person cross-functional squad (7 full-stack engineers, 3 QA): 1:1s with every engineer and the QA lead, hiring input with veto authority, and ownership of architecture direction.
Balance product drive against engineering quality, and coach engineers on end-to-end type-safety, domain-driven design, and observability.
Drove the team's migration to an AI-assisted development lifecycle in late 2025: built internal tooling to standardise how AI was used across the SDLC, and coached all seven engineers through the transition.
Built the document assembly service behind Word-template generation — Word add-in templates, a C# assembly service, a Ruby service carrying over legacy logic, and a Go sidecar for DOCX-to-PDF, all coordinated through Temporal. Moving generation off Rails + Sidekiq onto that model cut P95 latency from 30 seconds to under 10 (measured in DataDog) and raised job completion from 85% to 96% (completion, not AI output quality) on a platform producing ~30k documents and ~500k AI prompts a month.
Cut quarterly bug intake by around 80% over the past year by building out system visibility with DataDog and Claude Code.
Designed a decoupled API gateway on the OpenAI API for tiered user access plans, including usage metering and secure runtime calls to GPT models.
Migrating on-premise IIS services and legacy Azure services onto AWS so the whole platform sits on one cloud — roughly halfway through — with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and GitHub Actions as the deployment stack.
Own the micro front ends our team injects into other teams' projects, which lets us ship and release independently of their cycles.
Raised release frequency by roughly 50% (2026 year-to-date against the same period in 2025) across systems handling concurrent AI prompts, document generation, database transactions, and automated email.
