Cody Scoggins
Software Engineer

About

I was born and raised in the town of Summerville, SC, and attended school at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Since moving to Raleigh in the summer of '17, I've worked as a software engineer (or 'full stack developer', depending on your love/hate status of that buzzword and others). I'm passionate about solving problems and developing applications with an emphasis on user experience and thorough documentation. When not at work, you'll most likely find me out with friends or relaxing at home with my dog and cats.

Work Experience

June 2018 – Present
Software Engineer
I've worked as an engineer in a Scrum Team on a number of projects at Optum, delivering solutions to the problems presented by our business stakeholders. My responsibilities on the team primarily focus on an even mix of front-end Angular web development and back-end Java RESTful APIs and services.
Highlights
  • Developing front-end web applications with user experience (UX) considerations using Angular, with iterative development based on periodic client/business feedback.
  • Implementing back-end Java Spring Boot REST APIs and services to provide functionality for applications both internal and external to the team.
  • Ensuring code quality and functionality through automated testing of both front-end and back-end applications using primarily JUnit, Jasmine, and TestCafe.
  • Maintaining code coverage and security using tools such as Sonar and Scar/Fortify to address possible security concerns and ensure code adheres to best practices.
  • Ensuring and refining functionality across multiple environments with automated deployment tools such as Docker and Jenkins Pipeline and consistently committing code through proper GitHub branching practices
  • Cultivating excellent communication skills including both technical and non-technical writing to ensure swift onboarding for new users/developers and to facilitate development discussions that could otherwise be confusing or time consuming.
June 2017 – June 2018
Technology Development Program Associate - Software Developer Focus (TDP)
I was originally enrolled in Optum's Technology Develop Program, which aims to train recent college graduates in the job skills of their choosing by placing them in two 6-month rotations of different jobs before selecting their choice for a final position. Through a series of events during this time, I ended up working as a member of three teams under three different managers, eventually graduating to my final manager's team as a software engineer.
Highlights
  • Learned and developed skills with front-end engineering, primarily with Angular 2+, to develop applications for the primary purpose of demoing P.O.C. technologies and services to upper management.
  • Developed skills and gained experience working on rapid and iterative P.O.C. projects, including working on a start-to-finish 6 week P.O.C. project with 2 other engineers in one week Agile sprints.
  • Developed basic level familiarity and skills with many different web hosting/deployment technologies, such as AWS, OpenShift, and Azure, as the team worked to give insight to leadership about possible architectural shifts for future cloud applications.
May 2016 – August 2016
Intern
I interned with Optum in Greenville, SC. My work primarily involved doing high-level technical debt/backlog work for an existing team, tasked with verifying the validity of a proposed source system change for an existing core application/pipeline.
Highlights
  • Developed mapping documentation between two database systems based on a provided list of required fields for the existing application structure.
  • Improved knowledge of SQL database systems and relational database interactions through practical experience.
  • Developed communication skills through contact with the existing team and management, as well as an improved understanding of operational flow.
January 2014 – January 2016
Assistant Photography Editor
After volunteering as a photographer for The Daily Gamecock (Newspaper of the University of South Carolina), I was offered the position of Assistant Photography Editor on the staff of the paper.
Highlights
  • Organized and instructed other photographers to ensure events around the college were properly covered
  • Collaborated with fellow editors at bi-weekly meetings to plan upcoming event coverage, as well as outlining methods to improve the skills of junior photographers.
  • Responsible for editing of photos using various Adobe programs, primarily Lightroom and Photoshop.
