About

Hello! I’m John. I was a Fire-Rescue Specialist in SCDF instructing new recruits in basic footdrill and rescue equipment. But before that I was very familiar with ERP solutions like SAP MRP and QAD, and even helped with the data migration with Rexel. Most recently I’ve gained a quick peek into how hospitality giant Marriott International has been able to adopt IT in their industry. My expertise doesn’t just end with my knowledge in ERP systems. I've also realised 5 full stack solutions pushed to the cloud, with one of them fully in use within the Singapore Civil Defence Force (from proposal to deployment). When I started out with Python, Java, ASP.NET WebForms, and SAP ERP, I started to see that a future of myself in IT Consultancies like Accenture, helping organisations understand and adopt IT.However, when I entered University and immersed myself with open source technologies like PHP, Javascript, and Cloud technologies like Linode, I saw myself in another future in becoming an open source solutions provider, and hopefully be part of the democratisation of the internet. My small contribution of running a Matrix and Nextcloud server is just a small step in realising that dream. It would be amazing if I would be able to both help big organisations take advantage of IT and still play a part in the decentralisation of the internet at the same time, but right now I'm focused on completing my studies in SMU.

SGT John Francis was enlisted into the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) in May 2018. After completing the Basic Rescue Training at the National Service Training Institute (NSTI), he was selected to undergo the 12-week Fire Fighter Course (FFC) at the Civil Defence Academy (CDA). He performed well during the course and qualified to advance his training for another 20-weeks with the Section Commander Course (SCC). There he was trained to be a fire and rescue specialist. SGT John completed his training and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant (1). SGT John was then posted to NSTI and served as an Instructor at the Basic Rescue Training Centre (BRTC) Alpha Company. Upon his ORD, SGT John extended his National Service thru the Voluntary Extension Scheme (VES) for another one month. As an Instructor, SGT John assisted his Platoon Commander to manage a platoon of recruits as they undergo training in NSTI for three months. This included conducting classroom based lessons, physical and equipment training, supervising them daily whilst they were in camp and overseeing their welfare at all times. SGT John's roles also included the command responsibility to ensure all matters for recruits under his charge were taken care of. Not an easy task to perform but SGT John was able to perform these tasks effectively. In the course of his work, SGT John attended the Instructor Preparatory Course to sharpen his instructional skills. Afterwhich he assisted to mentor new instructors who were posted to the Alpha Company. For his good and consistent performance, SGT John was promoted to the rank of Sergeant (2) in January 2020. Apart from training recruits, SGT John also contributed to many other activities in NSTI. During the quarterly recruit enlistment, he performed as a tour ambassador to interact with parents of enlistees. And during he quarterly recruits passing out ceremony, SGT John was the official emcee during the parade and ceremonial segment of the event. In addition to this, SGT John also spearheaded to create a web based application to track attendance of recruits undergoing training in NSTI. For up to five months, SGT John and a team of fellow NSFs, worked on the program. He completed the task and it has since been used by Head BRTC and his team. SGT John performed all these duties well and was awarded the SCDF Wall of Fame Award in December 2019. SGT John takes his duties as a National Serviceman and instructor in NSTI seriously and makes positive contributions to all the assignments he was tasked to do. He developed his leadership skills in NSTI and his supervisors, peers and subordinates have commended him well for his confidence, capability to motivate his recruits and multi-task the work assigned to him. He requires little supervision and was able to perform the tasks assigned to him and deliver the required outcomes in good time. SGT John also demonstrates good leadership qualities when managing his trainees and working with his peers. I commend him for this and his positive work attitude. As a person, he is confident, sincere and can be trusted to perform well when tasked with assignments. SGT John has excelled whilst performing his National Service. I commend him for his contributions towards National Service and the SCDF, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
